Using the Whetstone

An RGM whetstone (typically a dual-sided corundum stone designed for fine engraving, woodcarving, and lino cutting tools) is easy to use. It features a coarse side for shaping the edge and a fine side for final honing.

1. Prepare the Stone

  • Moisten the stone: Before sharpening, wet the stone with water or a light honing oil to create an abrasive slurry that reduces friction and improves the sharpening process.
  • Secure the stone: Place the whetstone on a damp cloth or a non-slip surface to prevent it from moving while you work.

2. Set the Sharpening Angle

  • Hold the tool flat against the stone, maintaining the original factory bevel angle.
  • For fine woodcarving tools, this angle is typically around 15–20°.

3. Sharpen and Shape the Edge (Coarse Side)

  • Start with the coarse side of the stone.
  • Move the blade forward across the stone using a smooth, even sweeping motion (or a circular motion for very small gouges or engraving tools). Apply light, consistent pressure.
  • Repeat until you can feel a slight burr (a microscopic metal edge) on the opposite side of the blade.

4. Hone and Finish (Fine Side)

  • Turn the stone over to the fine side.
  • Repeat the same sharpening motion to refine the cutting edge and remove the burr, alternating sides of the blade. This produces a perfectly symmetrical, razor-sharp edge.

5. Clean the Tool

  • Wipe both the tool and the whetstone with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove metal particles and abrasive residue.
