Potato starch is a very pure white powder which is very good soluble in water, however, hardly soluble in alcohol.

Dextrine forms a very sticky syrup with water and it thus suitable as a substitute for gum arabic and tragacanth gum powder in the manufacture of glues (e.g. for stamps, leather, photographic articles). Dextrine is also used to thicken colored printing ink, for starching and for printing wallpaper.
